Dear Amitaji:
Very informative presentation on Ayurveda last weekend. Thank you.
You spoke about Prakruti and Vikruti dosha, which I understood as Innate and Current dosha respectively. Can you pls clarify why the focus on identifying the Prakriti dosha rather than the Vikruti dosha when the objective is to rectify the Current presumably unbalanced dosha?
Great question, Sampath! Indeed, during an imbalance causing illness or pain, we must look at one's Vikruti and correct the dosha(s) that is aggravated. For example, if one is Pitta-dominant Prakruti, but Vata aggravation is causing chronic pain, constipation, etc. then we will first treat Vata with the proper Vata-pacifying diet and lifestyle. Once the symptoms resolve, the person can eat according to their dosha type, while still being mindful about their lifestyle so as not to aggravate Vata again (hectic/stressed out lifestyle is a common cause of Vata imbalance).
During the seminar I wanted the audience to understand their Prakruti in order to choose appropriate foods to keep them balanced and potentially avoid dosha Vikruti.
